When Acne Leaves its Mark

Many people who suffer from acne go on to develop facial scarring from the condition. Unfortunately, acne affects many men and women of all ages—even well after adolescence. Hormones, bacteria, and of course stress can blemish otherwise healthy skin.

Our Approach to

Acne Scar Reduction

At our clinic in Chicago, acne scar reduction is approached on a person by person basis. Various methods can be utilized to help improve your complexion. As stated above, there’s no “set” treatment to address acne scarring because every patient is unique, with their own specific skin, scars, and severity. At Beautify at AMS, we take a personalized approach, combining innovative and advanced treatments to best suit you as an individual.

Laser Resurfacing

Laser skin resurfacing has proven to be one of the very best procedures for treating acne scars. It works by targeting the outer layer of skin with powerful laser light—a process that results in the production of new, healthy skin cells.

After a series of laser skin resurfacing treatments, the skin’s tone and texture are greatly improved, and scarring is reduced.

PRP Microneedling

Many studies have reported that PRP (platelet-rich plasma) can speed up tissue repair and lessen the appearance of acne scarring when used in combination with microneedling. One study even reported that PRP microneedling improved acne scars by 62.20%. This procedure works by incorporating growth factors from your very own body with microneedling, which is a highly effective procedure even on its own.

Medical-Grade Peels

Medical-grade peels that are administered by a skincare expert are excellent for acne scar reduction. A chemical solution is applied directly to the skin in order to remove the top layer of damaged, scarred skin. When the new skin replaces the top layer, it’s healthier, more radiant, and smoother—with less acne scarring being visible.

Bellafill: A Revolutionary Filler for Long-Term Smoothness

The only long-term dermal filler approved by the FDA for acne scar reduction is Bellafill®, a collagen-stimulating filler that literally fills the pitted scar. Bellafill contains a substance called polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), which triggers your body’s own fibroblasts to produce new collagen wherever the product is injected.  This means that ultimately, your own collagen becomes the filler. In the case of acne scarring, this treatment can lead to long-lasting acne scar reduction (as long as no active acne is present to create new scars).

Once a scar is properly treated with Bellafill, the results can last many years because the product creates a strong structure underneath the skin to “hold” your new collagen. Results can be even further enhanced when redness and surface scar tissue are treated with a procedure such as microneedling or medical-grade skin peels (mentioned above). Both medical professionals and patients alike find Bellafill to be one of the most exciting developments in the area of acne scar treatment in many years.
