What are Dermal Fillers?

There is a wide range of facial fillers available. Each filler has different qualities and goals, and it’s very important to only work with specialists who understand these nuanced differences in order to achieve the most natural, beautiful results possible.

  • Add youthful volume to hollow areas
  • Lift sagging skin
  • Sculpt and define the chin, cheek area, jawline, etc.
  • Achieve a non-surgical nose job
  • Plump and contour thin or dull lips
  • Restore volume to the backs of the hands

Should I get Dermal Fillers or Facial Surgery?

Although facial fillers are well-known for reducing the appearance of wrinkles, they can do so much more beyond that. When used correctly by a knowledgeable specialist, fillers have the ability to sculpt the face.

They can provide higher cheekbones; give more definition to a loose jawline; hide a bump on the nasal bridge, and give you the lips of your dreams. Dermal fillers can truly achieve a dramatic result with very little downtime, and much less expense than surgery.

Types of Dermal Fillers

Hyaluronic Acid Dermal Fillers

(Restylane®, Juvéderm®, and Belotero®)

These fillers are made from hyaluronic acid (HA), a naturally occurring sugar in the body that attracts and binds water. HA helps keep the skin plump, hydrated, and healthy.

Poly-L-Lactic Acid Dermal Fillers

(Sculptra®)

Poly-l-lactic acid (PLLA) dermal fillers are known more commonly as “collagen stimulators” they trigger the body’s natural collagen growth process in addition to smoothing lines and wrinkles. PLLA fillers are also different than other fillers because the onset is gradual instead of immediate, taking a few months to become visible.

Calcium Hydroxylapatite Dermal Fillers

(Radiesse®)

Calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) is a substance that’s naturally found in our bones. CaHa fillers tend to last longer than HA fillers, and are excellent for adding volume to hollow/sunken areas of the face and kickstarting new collagen production.

Polymethyl Methacrylate Dermal Fillers

(Bellafill®)

Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) is a synthetic, biocompatible substance. When used in a facial filler, PMMA is administered as microspheres that are suspended inside of a collagen gel. When this collagen gel is gradually absorbed by the body, it will be replaced by your own naturally produced collagen, with those microspheres working as an inside structure to provide the skin with a lift that can last up to five years.

Which Filler is Right for You?

With all the different types of dermal fillers available now that are so effective, it can be confusing and overwhelming to know which one(s) may be right for you. This is why it’s important for us to meet with you first. During your consultation a dermal filler specialist will assess your problem areas, discuss any allergies, and discuss your personal aesthetic goals. This will help us to know which filler will work best for you. Our specialists have an in-depth knowledge of the variations of every facial filler, and we will explain which is right for you.

What Should I Expect During My Appointment?

Your appointment will begin with cleansing the skin and administering a topical anesthetic as needed. One of our highly trained, experienced aestheticians will administer the injections skillfully and expertly using a fine needle. One of the best things about facial fillers is how quick and convenient treatments are. While every patient’s treatment will be different based on his or her specific needs, in general appointments for our facial fillers in Chicago are so fast that you can have them done during your lunch break.

What are the Downtime and Results?

Facial fillers are considered to be a no-downtime treatment; however, you may experience mild bruising, redness, itching, and/or swelling at the injection sites which will subside within 1-3 days. Different facial fillers have different onset times, so when you will be able to see results will vary depending on what product was used. During your consultation, a specialist will go over your cosmetic concerns to determine the right filler for you. Once this is determined, we will be able to tell you how quickly you can expect to see results—and how long they will last.

How long after fillers can I wear makeup?

Can you feel fillers in your face?

After receiving dermal filler injections, the face may feel fuller than usual due to minor post-treatment swelling. These sensations will subside within a week or so. Lip fillers cannot be felt when closing the lips or kissing.

What should I avoid after fillers?

Patients should avoid strenuous activities and exercise for the first 24 hours after their injections. For 72 hours, they should stay out of direct sun and abstain from exposure to intense heat (hot tubs, saunas, steam rooms, etc.) Excess alcohol and salt should be avoided as well, as these can exacerbate swelling.

What should you not do before getting fillers?

Patients should avoid taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as Ibuprofen, Advil, Motrin, and Aleve. Fish oil, high doses of Vitamin E, and Ginkgo Biloba should be set aside temporarily. Your practitioner will provide a full list of supplements and medications to postpone before treatment. Alcoholic beverages should not be consumed for 24 hours prior to your session, as this can increase the risk of bleeding and bruising. Avoid tweezing, waxing, or bleaching the skin, and stay out of the sun for a week before your appointment.

Should I lose weight before getting fillers?

Practitioners typically suggest that patients have achieved their weight loss goals prior to undergoing injectables, as this allows them to create the most successful treatment plan that properly addresses current aesthetic concerns. This is because weight loss can affect facial volume.

Do fillers look better over time?

Results after dermal fillers continue to evolve over several months. Sometimes it takes the filler a while to settle in and become integrated with the existing facial structures.

How long after fillers can I wear makeup?

Patients should avoid using makeup for at least 12 hours after their injections. This gives the skin time to properly absorb the filler.
