Get Rid of Submental Fat

Jowling—the presence of fat under the jawline, chin, and neck area that can appear as a double chin—is one of the most common areas of concern that develops over time. Many individuals are greatly bothered by the appearance of this excess fat in the mirror or photographs. Kybella is an injectable treatment that utilizes a naturally-found compound in the body called deoxycholic acid to absorb and break down fat cells. The result is not only a loss of fat cells in the area, but the induction of collagen that causes skin tightening around the chin and jawline.

The Science of Kybella

When Kybella is injected into the unwanted fat cells, its synthetic version of deoxycholic acid destroys them—making it impossible for fat to ever be stored there again. Over the course of several weeks, the dead fat cells are metabolized by the body and flushed out through the body’s lymphatic system.

FAQ

Is Kybella safe?

Do Kybella treatments hurt?

A numbing agent can be used to help with any discomfort during your Kybella treatment. Some patients describe feeling “pressure” or a “mild burning” during the injections, but also report that the treatment is very tolerable.

How many treatments will I need?

This question can only be answered during your consultation, as you will need to be evaluated first. The answer will depend on the fullness of your double chin and your personal cosmetic goals.

Is Kybella safe?

Kybella is very safe as long as it’s been administered by a certified, skilled, experienced specialist. Be sure when choosing your provider to do your research and ensure that they are not only qualified and licensed to treat with Kybella, but also have plenty of experience.

What are Kybella Treatments Like?

When arriving to Beautify at AMS in Chicago, Kybella treatments will begin with your skin being cleansed and prepped. If needed, we will apply a topical numbing anesthetic. A dot grid will also be used to help guide your aesthetician. Once you’re ready, the injections will begin. About 10-50 injections will be administered, depending on the severity of your excess fat. Once the injections have been completed, the area will be dressed with a compression bandage. Kybella treatments are typically spaced eight weeks apart, and 2-4 sessions are generally recommended for the best results. Kybella can also be combined with other non-invasive, non-surgical, scarless methods of fat removal such as Exilis™. After the procedure, side effects may include mild burning, swelling, redness, and numbness in the treatment area, and bruising that may last for 1-2 weeks.

What to Expect After the Procedure

There is no significant downtime with Kybella, but some patients experience side effects including mild burning, swelling, redness, discomfort, and/or numbness in the treatment area for a day or two, and bruising that can last up to 1-2 weeks. It’s important for those who are considering Kybella to be aware that the results appear over time.

Gradual reduction in fullness occurring in the following weeks to one month. It’s also good to be aware that your treatment may require multiple treatments. (This will be determined either at your consultation or at your follow-up appointment.)

Our patients are thrilled with this completely non-surgical, scar-free treatment to address this common problem area. The results are long-lasting as long as you maintain a stable weight, and the fat removal is permanent. If you have any questions regarding Kybella, Chicago’s highly experienced aestheticians at Beautify at AMS would be more than happy to help you.
