What is Hand Rejuvenation?

Hand rejuvenation is a very effective treatment that involves injecting dermal fillers below the skin on the back of the hands to replace the layer of fat that has decreased. We then massage the filler evenly throughout the back of the hands to smooth out wrinkles, tighten the skin, and camouflage the prominent bones, tendons, and veins.

Benefits of Hand Rejuvenation

  • Gives the hands a more youthful appearance
  • Immediate plumping and smoothing results
  • Quick and convenient in-office treatments
  • FDA-approved and safe
  • Results can last up to one year
  • Triggers new collagen growth

How the Hands Age

As we age, the skin on the back of our hands begins to thin out. Additionally, when we are young, there’s a plump layer of fat below the skin of the hands that gives them a healthy, full appearance. Over time, this layer of fat starts to wither away.

Add in sun exposure, genetics, and lifestyle choices, and the end result is hands that have thin, wrinkled, loose skin.  Due to the loss of the fatty layer, the veins, tendons, bones, and joints begin to stick out—which can give the hands an aged look.

What Dermal Fillers are Used?

Restylane Lyft

Restylane® Lyft is the only hyaluronic acid filler that has been FDA-approved for hand rejuvenation. This specific dermal filler has been designed to include lidocaine (a numbing agent) in its solution for more comfortable injections.

Radiesse

Radiesse® is another dermal filler that has been FDA-approved to treat the back of the hands, but instead of hyaluronic acid, it’s made of calcium hydroxyapatite. Unlike Restylane Lyft, Radiesse does not include lidocaine, which may make injections a bit less comfortable.

Hand Rejuvenation Treatments

Before your hand rejuvenation treatment, we will numb your skin to help keep you as comfortable as possible. After this, the filler will be administered in one of the following two techniques:

  • We will administer multiple injections in very small amounts between the tendons
  • We will administer one big injection in the center of your hand and then massage the product to where it needs to go

What Results to Expect

Although there’s no downtime with hand rejuvenation using dermal fillers, some patients do have mild swelling and bruising for a few days.

You will see the successful results of your hand rejuvenation immediately after your treatment. Results last for 9-12 months, and it’s a good idea to adopt a scheduled maintenance program if you want your results to remain constant.

We recommend that our hand rejuvenation patients come in for a touch-up every nine months (or sooner if you notice the filler is absorbing).
