Slim, Flatten, and Sculpt Your Abdomen

Whereas tummy tucks are often associated with women because it’s such a popular post-pregnancy surgery, many men also undergo a tummy tuck after significant weight loss, as it has the ability to tighten and tone the midsection.

Differences Between the Male and Female Tummy Tuck

There are differences in a tummy tuck for men and women, and our surgeons at Beautify at AMS understand how to tailor each procedure to meet the needs of every patient who comes to us. The main differences in a male and female tummy tuck include the following:

Aesthetic Goals

Most women choose a tummy tuck because they want a smaller waist and a tighter, more toned stomach. Men, however, often choose a tummy tuck for a more athletic appearance. They typically want a stronger-looking, flatter, V-shaped abdomen.

Complexity

A tummy tuck tends to be more extensive for women because many women undergo the procedure after pregnancy, which means there is more sagginess, loss of skin elasticity, and separation of the abdominal wall muscle. Most men don’t require the abdominal wall muscles to be tightened. This also means less recovery time for most men than women.

Tummy Tuck Surgery Details

A tummy tuck is performed with the patient under general anesthesia, and utilizes a two-layer approach that repairs both the muscles and the skin. Two incisions will be created at the hipbones, and then around the belly button. Using the incisions, your surgeon will remove excess skin and fat.

Liposuction may be used at this point to get rid of any excess fat and to improve the contour of the abdomen. The skin will then be re-positioned to where it would naturally lie, and the incisions will then be closed. The surgery takes 2-5 hours to complete. While some patients are able to return to work in about two weeks, others may need more time.

What to Expect in Your Consultation

Before your surgery, you will have a consultation with one of our surgeons. This initial meeting is very important, as it allows the doctor to evaluate and assess the amount of fat cells in the abdominal area, as well as the degree of loose skin. Your surgeon will go over your medical history, any previous surgeries you may have had, your current lifestyle, how much the procedure will cost, what to expect during recovery, and any questions or concerns you have.
