Our doctors may recommend breast reconstruction surgery after you receive a mastectomy. If your results stated that you have breast cancer, or you are at high risk for cancer cell development in the future, breast reconstruction might be the solution you are looking for.
How Does Breast Reconstruction Work?
When receiving breast reconstruction surgery, we will re-build the affected breast or breasts. Breast reconstruction procedures create a breast shape by using either an artificial implant or a flap of tissue that we take from another area in your body. It’s important to understand that while breast reconstruction will help to re-build and shape the breast, it will not restore the sensation in the breast or the nipple. Over time, though, the skin over the reconstruction will become more sensitive to the touch.
An Emotionally Rewarding Procedure
The goal of breast reconstruction is to restore the appearance of the breast(s) as much as possible. However, with that in mind, it’s important for patients to be aware that their breasts will not be an exact replica of what they once were. Although there will be a difference, breast reconstruction is still very emotionally rewarding. The majority of women find this procedure to be a very important step in restoring their self-image and feeling like themselves again.
Develop a Treatment Plan
We understand that losing a breast can leave you feeling anxious, uncertain, and disheartened. We will sit down with you during a private consultation to discuss your goals.
During this meeting, we will develop a treatment plan that ensures that the cancerous cells are fully removed. Our staff will be here to support you every step of the way. If you have any questions before or after surgery, we will be more than happy to answer them. We want you to feel confident and safe when you are with us.
