How Does Breast Reconstruction Work?

When receiving breast reconstruction surgery, we will re-build the affected breast or breasts. Breast reconstruction procedures create a breast shape by using either an artificial implant or a flap of tissue that we take from another area in your body. It’s important to understand that while breast reconstruction will help to re-build and shape the breast, it will not restore the sensation in the breast or the nipple. Over time, though, the skin over the reconstruction will become more sensitive to the touch.

Will not be undergoing chemotherapy or radiation therapy
Are at a healthy weight
Do not have scarring from previous surgeries

Are non-smokers
Fully understand the breast reconstruction procedure and recovery process
Have realistic expectations for what breast reconstruction can accomplish
