How Blepharoplasty Opens and Refreshes the Eyes

Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgeries in the U.S., and is a relatively minor procedure that gets very effective results. For many individuals, the effects of aging on the eyelids result in puffy bags; loose, excess skin below the eyes, or droopy and hooded upper eyelids. These issues can be addressed with blepharoplasty, which removes excess fat, skin, and muscle from the lower and upper eyelids. The end result is a firmer, more rested, and ultimately more youthful appearance.

How is Eyelid

Surgery Performed?

When receiving eyelid surgery in Chicago at our accredited, state-of-the-art surgical center, your procedure can be performed under local anesthesia with sedation if you would prefer this to general anesthesia. Our office is attached to a state-of-the-art, accredited surgical center next door where we perform surgeries. During your consultation with us, we will discuss whether you would like upper eyelid surgery only; lower eyelid surgery only; both together, and/or any other procedures done at the same time. The surgery doesn’t hurt, thanks to the anesthetic. Depending on the combination of procedures you choose to have done, blepharoplasty takes approximately 2-3 hours.

In upper eyelid surgery, an incision is created in a natural fold of the upper eyelid, where it will be hidden once healed. Using this incision, sagging upper eyelid skin and excess fat will be removed.

In lower eyelid surgery, the incision is created just under the lower eyelashes within the natural crease lines, or sometimes inside the lower eyelid (if only fat needs to be removed). Through this incision, excess skin, muscle, and fat are removed to reduce puffiness under the eyes. In addition, fat and loose muscles may be adjusted.

For appropriate candidates, Dr. Bayran can make a surgical incision on the inside of the eye to minimize scarring and downtime.

What Does Recovery Involve?

Approximately one week of recovery
Keep your head elevated during recovery to minimize swelling
Eyelids may feel tight, sore, sticky, blurry, light sensitive, and/or dry during recovery
Eyelids may be swollen, leaky, and/or discolored during recovery
Expect bruising that subsides within one week
Take it easy the first few days after surgery
Sutures are removed in about five days
Do not wear contact lenses for three weeks
Do not exercise until we advise you to

What Results to Expect

Although early results will be visible a few weeks following your blepharoplasty, residual swelling and bruising can take a month to fade. Your scars will be concealed once the incisions have healed, and your results will be permanent.

Non-Surgical Options
